Grounding Isn't a Trick — It's a Return

By Shay Zamora · July 2026 · 4 min read

Grounding techniques are everywhere now. Five things you can see, four you can touch, three you can hear. They work — for a minute. Then they stop, because most people are using them as a distraction from the feeling, not a return to the body.

Real grounding isn't about escaping what you feel. It's about giving your body enough here-and-now sensation that it can bear to feel what it feels. Different intention, different result.

A better way to ground

  • Feet on the floor. Actual pressure. Notice the weight.
  • One long exhale — longer than the inhale.
  • Name the room you're in, out loud if you can.
  • Then, and only then, let yourself feel what's actually there.

Grounding is not a doorway out of the body. It's a doorway back in.

The women I work with often report the same thing after a few weeks of practicing this way: the feelings that used to feel unsurvivable become tolerable. Not because they got smaller. Because their bodies got bigger. That's the whole game.
