The Money Patterns You Did Not Choose

By Shay Zamora · March 2025 · 5 min read

By the time most of us are eight years old, we have already absorbed our family's entire relationship with money. Whether money was scarce or plentiful, spoken about or hidden, tied to love or tied to fear — all of it was learning. And most of it was never named out loud.

Questions That Surface The Script

  • What did money feel like in your home growing up?
  • Who talked about it and who did not?
  • What did you learn that people with money were like?
  • What did you learn that people without money were like?
  • Which of those beliefs are still driving your choices today?

You do not have to journal for an hour. Sit with one of these questions on a walk. Let the honest answer arrive without editing. That is the beginning of choosing something new.

You cannot rewrite a script you cannot read.

A New Line

Pick one sentence you inherited about money and write the sentence you would rather live inside. Not a mantra. Not a wish. A working belief. Money can stay in my house. I am allowed to receive help. I do not have to earn rest. Say it out loud. Say it until your body stops flinching.

This is the inner work underneath every budget. Financial literacy without this work is a house on sand. Do both.
