Your Credit Score Is Not Your Character

By Shay Zamora · February 2026 · 5 min read

A credit score is a risk prediction, not a personal review. It tells a lender how likely you are to repay borrowed money on time. That is it. It does not measure how hard you have worked, how far you have come, or how much you are loved.

What Actually Moves The Number

  • Payment history. On time payments, even minimums, are the single biggest lever.
  • Utilization. Keeping balances under thirty percent of your limit is the quiet win.
  • Age of accounts. Do not close your oldest card just because you do not use it.
  • New credit. Space out applications so hard pulls do not stack.
  • Credit mix. A small installment loan alongside a card can help, but never take on debt just to chase a score.

One Move This Month

Pull your free report from annualcreditreport.com. Not the app version. The full report. Read it like a story about someone you love. Dispute anything that is not yours. Then pick one account and set it to autopay the minimum. That is the whole assignment.

You are allowed to rebuild slowly and still be proud.
