Budgeting When Your Nervous System Is Tired
Most budgeting advice assumes you have a calm nervous system, a predictable paycheck, and no history with scarcity. If any of those are missing, the standard spreadsheet approach falls apart by week two. This is a different way in.
A budget is not a punishment plan. It is a map of where your care and your money are already going. Before you cut anything, you have to see it honestly. Honesty needs safety, and safety needs regulation.
A budget is a love letter to your future self, not a leash for your present one.
The Three Number Rule
Instead of forty line items, start with three numbers. What comes in every month. What has to go out no matter what. What is left. That is the whole picture. Everything else is a decision, not a debate.
A Weekly Money Check In
- Five minutes on Sunday. No shame allowed in the room.
- Look at last week. Notice the story, not just the number.
- Pick one gentle move for the next seven days. One, not five.
