The Difference Between Being Heard and Being Fixed

By Shay Zamora · July 2026 · 4 min read

You know the moment. You say something raw, and the person across from you responds with a plan. Have you tried therapy? Have you tried journaling? Have you tried getting more sleep? None of it is wrong. All of it is off.

When you're carrying something heavy, a plan doesn't land. Not because plans are bad — because your nervous system isn't shopping for a plan. It's asking one question: is it safe to feel this in front of you? Every solution offered before that answer is 'yes' is heard as 'please stop feeling that so I don't have to.'

What being heard actually sounds like

  • 'That makes sense.'
  • 'Tell me more.'
  • 'What's the hardest part?'
  • Silence, held without fidgeting.

That's it. That's the technology. It looks like almost nothing and it changes everything. Because when a person actually feels heard, their body regulates. When their body regulates, their thinking clears. When their thinking clears, they usually find the plan themselves — and it's the right one, because it came from inside them.

Advice is a shortcut around the person's own knowing. Don't take it.

Try this: for the next week, when someone tells you something hard, resist the plan. Ask one more question instead. See what they say. See what shifts. See what you learn about how rarely most of us are actually listened to.
